The holiday season should be a fun time of the year spent with family, friends, gifts, and delicious food. However, many property owners experience plumbing related problems during this time of the year. The good news is that it’s fairly simple to avoid these issues when you are aware of what causes them in the first place. The following information will provide you with some plumbing related tips for the upcoming holiday season. First and foremost, you should be well aware of the foods that can go down the disposal, and the ones that cannot.
You will probably be spending a lot of time in your kitchen preparing, cooking and baking various foods during the holidays. However, if your disposal backs up it can cause a humongous mess. With that being stated, do not put any animal bones, coffee grounds, eggshells, fibrous or stingy fruits and vegetables, nuts and shells, onion layers, pasta, rice or bread, pits, or seeds in your disposal. In addition, you should never pour food grease or any other type of grease down the disposal or any drains for that matter.
You may be wondering why? When grease cools off it will clog your drain. The grease becomes thick and sticky and everything else you put down the drain will stick to it. Speaking of things that should never go down the drains, you need to be cautious with the toilets. The only thing that should be flushed down the toilet, besides waste and the waste water, is toilet paper. Stay away from paper towels, flushable wipes, cotton balls, feminine hygiene products and everything else besides the toilet paper.
It’s also important to inform your guests about this rule of thumb. It’s also a good idea to space out showers, especially if you’re hosting guests for the holidays. The bottom line is that you should space out showers by approximately 15 minutes. That way, the drains will have enough time to clear out. You certainly don’t want to experience a blocked drain during the holiday season. In addition, it will provide your hot water heater with enough time to replenish itself. That way, everyone will be able to take a hot shower.
