There’s never a convenient time for your furnace/boiler to die, especially during the cold New England months. However, it happens all the time to property owners. Oftentimes we can repair your furnace/boiler and have it up and working again without much fuss. Yet, there are many cases where the heating equipment cannot be repaired and needs to be replaced. So, how can you tell the difference? Here are some signs that you need a new furnace/boiler. First and foremost, the typical furnace/boiler only lasts for 15-20 years.
That means when your heating equipment and or appliances starts to approach this time period, you need to start thinking about having it replaced. We do need to advise you that it can be difficult to tell how old your furnace/boiler is, especially if the previous owner had it installed. There are a few things you can do in order to determine how old your heating equipment is. For example, check the manual if you happen to have it. You can also look for the serial number that’s on the unit and then look it up online. Another obvious sign that your furnace/boiler needs to be replaced is if your energy bills keep going up above and beyond the recent hike in energy costs.
Your furnace/boiler consumes the most energy at your property. So, take a look at your monthly energy bills during the cold months. If you notice that you’re using more energy than in previous years, your furnace/boiler may very well need to be replaced. Once again, a simple repair may be all that it needs in order to work more efficiently. However, it could also mean that your furnace/boiler is at the end of its lifecycle and needs to be replaced. Keep in mind that when newer furnaces/boilers are well maintained they usually work at peak performance.
On the other hand, older heating equipment no longer has the ability to work at peak performance. That means they should be replaced immediately. In essence, energy is so expensive these days that the increase in energy costs is reason enough to have a new furnace installed if it can’t be repaired.
